Scripture Litany: Proper 26 B
Here’s a litany
combining Deuteronomy 6:1-9 with Psalm 119:1-8, two of the suggested alternate
scripture readings for Proper 26 B (the 23rd Sunday after
Pentecost).
Scripture Litany
(Deuteronomy 6:1-9, Psalm 119:1-8)
Listen, O
Israel!
The Lord is
our God, the Lord alone.
And you must
love the Lord your God
with all your
heart, all your soul, and all your strength.
Happy are the people who walk with
integrity,
who live according to the
instructions of the LORD.
You must commit
yourselves wholeheartedly
to these
commands that I am giving you today.
Repeat them
again and again to your children.
Talk about them
when you are at home and when you are on the road,
when you are
going to bed and when you are getting up.
Tie them to
your hands and wear them on your forehead as reminders.
Write them on
the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
Happy are the people who keep God’s
decrees,
who search for Him with all their
hearts—
who do not compromise with evil,
but faithfully follow His ways.
These are the
commands, decrees, and regulations
that the
Lord your God commanded me to teach you.
You must obey
them in the land you are about to enter and occupy,
and you and
your children and grandchildren must fear the Lord your God
as long as you
live.
If you obey all
his decrees and commands, you will enjoy a long life.
You have charged us to keep your
commandments carefully.
Oh, that our actions would
consistently reflect your decrees!
Then we would never feel ashamed
to compare our lives with your
commands.
We will give thanks to You by
following your decrees,
by living as we should.
Please don’t give up on us!
