Call to Worship & Prayer: Reformation

Here’s a call to worship and opening prayer suitable for use on Reformation Sunday (October 30, 2011).  They were written by the Rev. Dr. Letty Russell.

Call to Worship
(based on Hebrews 12:1-2, NRSV)

Since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses,
Let us also lay aside every weight, and the sin that clings so closely
And let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us,
Looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith. Amen

Prayer of Invocation

Gather us together this Reformation Sunday, O God,
that we may celebrate the witness
of our forefathers and foremothers
and the courage that gave birth to the Reformation.
Teach us how to honor the saints of God in ages past
as well as in our present days.
May the conviction of your grace written on their hearts
be one that forms our own faith.
Inspire us in the continuing reformation of the church
and be present to us your in word and sacrament.
In Christ’s name we pray. Amen
