Prayer: You Call Us

Here’s a prayer of petition written by Rev. Bob Gibson.

Prayer
(inspired by Matthew 4:18-22, Mark 1:16-20, Luke 5:1-11)

You call us,
Wanderer of seashores and sidewalks,
inviting us to sail out of our smug harbors
into the uncharted waters of faith
to wander off from our predictable paths to follow You
into the unpredictable footsteps of the kingdom;
to leave the comfort of our homes and accompany
You into the uncomfortable neighborhoods we usually avoid.

As we wait,
in our simple, sometimes crazy,
constantly uncertain lives,
speak to us, Spirit of Grace:
of that hope which is our anchor;
of that peace which is our rock;
of that grace which is our refuge.

Call to Worship: Come to Me!

Here’s a call to worship on the On Earth Peace website.

Call to Worship
(inspired by Matthew 4:19, Mark 1:16-20, Luke 5:1-11)

The invitation is given to every person by Jesus Christ:
"Come to me! Follow me! Be my disciples!"
We come to this place, to this time,
at the invitation of Jesus Christ.

In the name of Christ,
we accept the invitation to discipleship.

In the name of Christ,
as his disciples, we worship and praise God.

In the midst of a world where cruelty abounds,
we proclaim the God of Compassion.

In the midst of despair that threatens to swallow up
whole lives, whole peoples,
we proclaim the God of Hope.

In the midst of indifference and apathy,
we proclaim the God of Love.

Come, let us worship together
and share our witness of God's living presence in the world.

Prayer: Call to Obedience

Here’s a prayer about obedience from Walter Brueggemann.

A Hard, Deep Call to Obedience

You are the God who makes extravagant promises.
We relish your great promises of fidelity and presence and solidarity,
and we exude in them.
Only to find out, always too late,
that your promise always comes in the midst of a hard, deep call to obedience.

You are the God who calls people like us,
and the long list of mothers and fathers before us,
who trusted the promise enough to keep the call.

So we give you thanks that you are a calling God,
who calls always to dangerous new places.
We pray enough of your grace and mercy among us
that we may be among those who believe your promises
enough to respond to your call.

We pray in the one who embodied your promise
and enacted your call, even Jesus. Amen.

Prayer: We Have Staked Our Lives on You

Here’s a prayer of thanksgiving and petition inspired by Psalm 27. It was written by Christine Jerrett and posted on her blog. (See link below.)

A Prayer based on Psalm 27

Light-giving, salvation-making God,
we have staked our living and our dying
and our being raised to new life
on your steadfast love and faithfulness.

You have promised
to hide us in your shelter in the day of trouble.
You have promised to set us high on a rock,
above those powers and forces
that batter us,
that tempt us,
that work against us.

We have sought your presence here,
listening for your Word:
your Word that gives life;
your Word that heals the wounded heart;
your Word that speaks truth.

Teach us your Way, O Lord Jesus.
Lead us on a well-lighted path.
In the times when you are silent,
grant us the courage to wait,
trusting in your grace that brings your resurrection power
to our dead ends.

You are doing a ‘new thing’ among us.
though, it is hard to see at times what that ‘new thing’ is.
We bring to you our grieving over what is being lost,
our fears about what the future might hold,
our desire to love and serve you.

By the power of your Holy Spirit,
you are refining us,
purifying our discipleship,
pulling us into following Jesus
In this new world.

Grant us mercy and grace
to trust you more deeply,
for the only secure place is with you,
our light and our salvation,
the stronghold of our life.

We pray all these things in the name of Jesus,
the first-born of your new creation
our hope, our life.

Prayer for Others: Into These Dark Places

Here’s a prayer of intercession from Julie Rennick, a Church of Scotland minister serving in the village of Earlston. The prayer comes from RevGalBlogPals.

Prayer for Others

Precious Holy One
A brief look at the news shouts out that there are many dark places in our world.
Darkness through mindless violence
Darkness through frustration and horror
Darkness through grief and distress
Darkness through pain and disease
Darkness deep in the souls of those we love…

Holy One
into these dark places
into those unnamed dark places
into the darkness of fear and loneliness
pour out your radiance
shower down your light
break through pure brilliance
until the darkness is disspelled
and our hearts find peace
and the light of hope
can shine forth again
fresh and new with this new day
hear our prayers we pray,
Amen

Psalm 27: A Prayer

Here’s a prayer inspired by Psalm 27.  It was written by Bill & Kristi Gaultiere, and posted on Soul Shepherding.

One Thing
(based on Psalm 27)

One thing I ask
One thing I seek
Just one thing

To  dwell  in  the  house  of  the  Lord  all  the  days  of  my  life

To gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple
To be kept safe in Christ, hidden in him in the day of trouble
My heart says, “Seek Christ’s face!” Your face, Lord, is all I seek
My heart cries out, “Lord, please don’t hide your face from me!”
My heart longs for Jesus Christ alone, no matter what happens

One thing…Jesus

When darkness descends
One Light…Jesus
When enemies attack
One Savior…Jesus
When I am left alone
One Friend…Jesus
One thing…Jesus
I take  heart
One thing…Jesus
I   y e a r n
One thing…Jesus
I   w a i t
One thing…Jesus

Epiphany Prayer: Christ of the North

Here’s a prayer for the third Sunday after Epiphany Sunday from the Christian Aid website. It was adapted from “Invocation to the Christ of the Four Directions” (South, West, North, East), written by Suzanne Fageol.

Prayer for Epiphany:

Christ of the North

O Christ of the North:

You, who bore the pain of Calvary,
You, who blessed the ones who cursed you,
You, who lay in the tomb, who in your rising,
fulfilled the expectations and prophecies of the ancestors,
You, who in your ascending,
gave the promise of a new covenant for us all,
In the dark cold of winter,
begin the quiet cycle of birth again in our hearts as we tell your story.

As we journey through our own winters
O Christ of the North:

Keep vigil with us as we bear the harsh, cold times of our lives.
Wrap us in cloaks of clarity and strength
when the strong, north winds of challenge blow around us.
Help us to remember to call upon your many blessings
for our endurance and creativity.
Keep us in honesty and truth
with the remembrance of your faithfulness even unto crucifixion.

O Christ of the North, guardian of us all,
we call upon you. Amen.

Call to Worship: Isaiah 9

Here’s a call to worship for the Christmas or Epiphany seasons. It was written by Rev. Eliza Buchakjian-Tweedy, Pastor at First Church Congregational in Rochester, NH.

Call to Worship
(inspired by Isaiah 9)

The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light.
Those who lived in a land of deep darkness –
on them light has shined.
We long for a light to guide us.

You have multiplied the nation,
you have increased its joy.
We long for God's joy in our lives.

For the yoke of their burden,
and the bar across their shoulders,
the rod of their oppressor,
you have broken as on the day of Midian.
We long to be relieved of all that we carry.

For a child has been born for us,
a son given to us;
he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
He is named Emmanuel:
God with us.
In this tiny baby, this vulnerable child,
we find our light, our joy, our comfort.
Joy to the World! The Lord is come!

~ written by Rev. Eliza Buchakjian-Tweedy, Pastor at First Church Congregational in Rochester, NH.

Opening Prayer: Seeking Light

Here’s a responsive opening act of worship for the Advent season. It comes from Grace Church in Ealing, London.

Opening Call to Worship and Prayer:
Seeking Light

In this season of waiting, of longing,
of looking for you to come into our world
We are seeking light

[Light candles]

In our own lives
We are seeking light

In our neighbourhoods
We are seeking light

In our families
We are seeking light

In our work
We are seeking light

In Grace
We are seeking light

In our nation
We are seeking light

In our world
We are seeking light

In… [add your own longings]
We are seeking light

Seek and you shall find
Knock and the door will be opened
Ask and it will be given to you

Jesus Christ you are the light of the world
May we have eyes to see you
And ears to hear you
Come into our world today
Amen

Call to Worship: O come let us worship

Here’s a call to worship with allusions to Psalm 95:6, Psalm 24:1 and Isaiah 9:2. It was written by Leonard Sweet and posted on Preach the Story.

Call to Worship
(referencing Psalm 95:6, Psalm 24:1 and Isaiah 9:2)

O come let us worship and lift our hearts . . .
Not because the world is good and last week was awesome,
but because the earth is the Lord’s and everything in it,
the God of the whole Earth.

O come let us worship and raise our hands . . .
Not because our lives are all sweetness and light,
But because even those who walk in darkness
can see a great light,
the Bright and Morning Star

O come let us worship and bow down . . .
Not because God gives us what we want,
But because God gives us what we need –
the holy child Jesus, God’s Unspeakable Gift.

Call to Worship: Jesus Calls Us

Here’s a call to worship from Joanna Harader’s Spacious Faith website.

Call to Worship: Jesus Calls Us

Jesus calls us
to praise and prayer,
to song and silence;
Jesus calls us to worship.

Jesus calls us
to hearing and healing,
to service and solidarity;
Jesus calls us to love.

Jesus calls us
to advocacy and action,
to protest and provision;
Jesus calls us to justice.
Let us heed the call of Christ.
Let us worship together with joy.

Pastoral Prayer: Epiphany

Here is a prayer of thanksgiving and intercession from Richard J. Fairchild’s Kir-shalom website.

Prayer for Others

Eternal God,
you are the maker of us all, and we are your creation,
people formed in your image, as individuals, as community;
formed and fed and furnished with understanding of who you are

and of who and whose we are.
We worship you today in recognition of your calling,
of your communicating,
of your caring to invite us to share in your creative and healing work.
We are here because we have heard you speak in us and through others.
Help us, dear Lord, to ever respond to you
and your invitation to your grace...
Lord hear our prayer...

God of all our moments, of our days and our nights,
you speak and you act in the world around us,
not only to call all people to you,
but also to direct and guide us in the way of healing and wholeness.
Awaken us Lord, to hear what you would say to us.
Help us to open our ears, our eyes, and our hearts to your presence.
Help us to know when it is your voice we are hearing
and it when it is our prejudices and desires to which we are paying heed....
Lord hear our prayer...

Lord, we pray that your church may rise up with renewed commitment
in answer to your call,
that your people may be instruments of your grace and love....
Lord hear our prayer....

We pray for those who consider themselves inadequate
and dismiss or avoid your calling in their lives.
Give them a new vision,
a vision in which you are their strength and their hope...
Lord hear our prayer....

We pray for those who, in answering your call,
must leave the known for the unknown,
the oasis for the desert, the comfortable for the uncertain.
Grant them courage and steadfast faith...
Lord hear our prayer....

We pray too, today, O Lord, for those in want and need –
for those of us and of the larger community who suffer in body or in soul.
We remember before you…[various intercessions]
Lord, hear our pray.....

Loving Father, bless us all with an abundant faith,
a fruitful ministry, a joyful life.
Bless us and all those who gather together to continue the work of Jesus,
who came to heal, save, and deliver us all,
and who taught us to pray as one family, saying...
Our Father....

Call to Worship: Come, Follow Me

Here’s a responsive call to worship inspired by Jesus’ call to his disciples. It was written by Joanna Harader, and posted on her Spacious Faith website.

Call to Worship
(based on Mark 1:17, Mark 2:14, Matthew 4:19,
Luke 5:27-28, John 1:43-45)

Jesus comes along side us and calls us by name:
“[your name], follow me.”

A simple call. A hard call.
Because following requires leaving.
And we look around to see who else Jesus could be talking to.
And we look around to see the trappings of the life we know.

It’s hard to leave our nets and walk away from the lake.
But we have come this far,
to this place,
where we can listen and be transformed.

Prayer for Unity Amidst Diversity

Here’s a thoughtful prayer of petition for unity. It seems particularly timely these days.  It was posted on the “Monthly Prayers” page of the Christian Aid website.

Prayer for Unity

God of all creation
who called every being into life
who is mindful of humankind in all its diversity
who embodies us with dignity,
granting different gifts and talents to shape life in this world
we ask for your Spirit to unite us
where we face lack of understanding and disunity
in our churches, in our communities, in our countries.
And in silence we lay before you the burdens of our hearts.

(Silence)

We ask for your Spirit to unite us
in the face of the conflicts, hatred and violation of life
experienced in so many regions of the earth
and in silence we bring to you the pain of the victims.

(Silence)

We ask for your Spirit to unite us
wherever fear prevents us from caring for our neighbour,
from meeting people of different ethnicities, cultures
and faith communities with respect
and in silence we bring to you the brokenness of human relationships.

(Silence)

God of all creation,
in Christ we are reconciled,
and so we ask for your uniting Spirit
to help us to overcome all our divisions
that we may live in peace.

Prayer: A Shining Light

Here’s a prayer inspired by Ephesians 5:8-10. It was posted on beliefnet.com.

Prayer
(inspired by Ephesians 5:8-10)

Jesus, You are the Light of the World.
Shine Your light in me today.
Chase away the darkness of sin,
the darkness of fear and doubt and despair.
Fill me with the light of Your truth, Your Word.
Produce in me the fruit of righteousness –
the evidence that Your Holy Spirit lives in me
and works in me and works through me.
Teach me what is pleasing to You.
Make me a shining example of Your amazing grace,
redeeming love, and life-changing power.
May others be drawn to You through me. Amen.

Prayer: Psalm 27

Here’s a prayer of thanksgiving and commitment inspired by Psalm 27. It comes from the Monthly Prayers page of the Christian Aid website.

Prayer
(inspired by Psalm 27)

O God,
you promise to hide me in your shelter in the day of trouble,
and to conceal me in the corner of your tent.
When I am overwhelmed
by my own needs and the needs of the world,
I know that I can come and hide with you.
When changing the world seems too much
and the needs of others weigh upon me,
I know that you will give me space to think and rest.
When life just feels too much and the anxiety in me is great,
you offer me solace and a space to be.

And when you make me ready,
I will follow you.
When you gather my courage,
I will go where you lead me.
With your love inspiring me,
I will speak and act in your name.
Amen.

Litany of the Called

Here’s a litany which focuses on the call of Jesus. It was written by Roddy Hamilton, and posted on Mucky Paws.

Hamilton writes: “For four people reading from a single microphone in the middle. As one finishes and moves away, another comes in to pick up the story. One story, made up of each other’s stories.

There are so many stories we could have used for this. This is but a pinhead’s selection of people called to follow, to come from the darkness and shadows of one life… and called to be fully alive in the world, for that is what Jesus calls of us: not to be church members, or signatories to some doctrine, but to he fully alive with the life God grants and set that free in the world.”

Litany of the Called

Voice 1 (Male):
“Come follow me,” he said as he walked towards us.
“Leave the nets behind. Become nets yourself.
We have an adventure to be part of.”
And so we left with him not knowing what lay in front of us.

Voice 2: (Female):
In front of me was a crowd of Pharisees: all of them hypocrites.
They knew what I had done and done it mainly with them,
yet they were ready to stone me for it.
Jesus called out,
“Let him who is without sin cast the first stone,”
and there was silence
and one by one they left me with him
who called me to go and find my humanity again,
and so I went more alive than ever before.

Voice 3 (Female):
She was more alive than every before, my daughter.
When her father left her to find Jesus
he knew he’d never see her again, my poor daughter,
not able to make it to womanhood.
But Jesus never gave up hope.
We left him with her
and after what seemed an eternity he called for food,
‘Your daughter is alive and hungry”
and so we threw our sadness into celebration
that she had been called back to life.

Voice 4 (Male):
I was called back to life.
I was once dead,
not the death of eternity, worse than that,
the death of the living.
I am a tax-collector.
My death was the silence and hatred of others
until I climbed a tree,
and was invited back into my own home by Jesus
for a meal through which I was reborn,
a new person now called a friend of God.
I was on my way.

Voice 1 (Male):
We were on our way, ten of us,
unclean with bandaged limbs,
dirty rags covering our hands and feet
that leprosy was eating away.
Everyone avoided us except Jesus who touched us,
befriended us and called us back into community,
clean once more and acceptable.
I ran back to Jesus to thank him,
it was all I could do.

Voice 2 (Female):
It was all I could do to say ‘Yes!’
Yes to God asking me to be his handmaid:
mother of a child who would be the salvation of the world,
who harboured hope enough
to bring down the oppressor and the tyrant
and lift up the poor and hungry.
I was called to be the mother of God
and I said ‘Yes!’

Voice 3 (Female):
I said ‘yes’
but it wasn’t in some biblical story.
It was now.
I said ‘yes!’ to God’s justice today,
God’s hope now,
God’s intent in me,
to call out the life in me,
and set it free in the world,
to be a follower of adventures,
a follower of dreams,
a follower of love.

Voice 4 (Male):
Be a follower of love,
and join the fishermen and the sinners,
the women and the children,
the sick and the poor,
the needy and the hopeful:
called to be fully alive in this world,
called to be the hands and feet of heaven,
called to be all we can be,
called to follow.

Confession: Walking in Darkness

Here’s a prayer of confession inspired by the suggested scripture readings for the third Sunday after Epiphany, Year A. It was written by Stephen Fearing and posted on Wild and Precious Life.

Prayer of Confession
(inspired by Isaiah 9:1-4, Matthew 4:12-23, 1 Corinthians 1:10-18)

God, our Light and Salvation,
forgive us for those moments when we have walked in darkness,
stumbling in the wilderness of quarrels, division, and bickering.
You have called us to follow you and to fish for people
but too often we think that our way is the only way to do your will.
Forgive us, Lord, for the brokenness that we bring upon ourselves.

(space for silent confessions and/or a sung kyrie)

God, the Stronghold of our Life,
hear our cry as we come to you for unity.
Send your Spirit to gather us as you desire us.
Remind us that unity does not mean uniformity.
Teach us that the “same mind” you call us to have
is not ours, but the mind of your Son, Jesus Christ,
in whose name we pray.  Amen.
